What is a fallback voice?
Spoken requires an internet connection to use its selection of high-quality voices. When you lose connection or deliberately disconnect, your chosen voice will switch to a fallback — a lower quality voice built into your phone by default. A fallback voice won’t sound exactly like your chosen online voice, but it will match the same accent and gender in most cases. Please note, however, that the fallback voice you hear may vary from device to device.
Trial and Premium users can switch between fallback voices while offline by going to the “Change My Voice” page. You will hear each Spoken voice’s fallback and can adjust the speed and pitch. You will know you’re hearing a fallback because the voice will announce itself as “the fallback for [voice name].” Similarly, the sample sentence will explain that you are listening to an offline fallback instead of the usual voice.
Free tier users are switched to a fallback voice after their trial expires, even if they have an internet connection. At this time, the voice cannot be changed after trial expiration.
Known issue for Samsung users
Most Samsung devices only have one fallback voice enabled by default, which can cause mismatches in accent or gender. Fortunately, you can enable more voices with better quality in your device’s settings.
- Go to: Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-Speech Output > Preferred Engine.
- Here, select “Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google.”
- In Spoken, you can now hear multiple fallback voices if you visit the “Change My Voice” page while offline.
