Can I use ElevenLabs voices in Spoken?

You can use ElevenLabs voices in Spoken if you have an ElevenLabs account. To use them, you will need to link Spoken to your account using an API key. Below, we explain how to create a key and add it to Spoken so you can speak using voices from your ElevenLabs library.

If you don’t have an ElevenLabs account yet, you can sign up for free. Free-tier users get approximately ten minutes of speech. For more speech time, you’ll need to subscribe to ElevenLabs. If you have a diagnosed speech disability, you may be eligible to receive a subscription at no cost. Some charitable organizations distribute licenses so people with disabilities can access ElevenLabs services for free. You can find more information about that lower on the page.

How to use ElevenLabs voices in Spoken

  1. Visit elevenlabs.io. Make sure you’re logged in. If you don’t have an account yet, sign up.
  2. View the navigational menu on the left side of the website. If you’re on the mobile website, this menu will likely be collapsed — tap the icon in the top left corner next to “Home” to open it. Near the bottom, click on the “Developers” option.

If you don’t want to create an unrestricted key, you will need to enable access to Text to Speech and Voice Generation. You will also need to set Voices and User to read.

If you’re a paying subscriber to ElevenLabs and have “usage based billing” enabled, you may wish to apply a credit limit to the API key so you don’t get charged for exceeding your allotted monthly credits. If you don’t have usage based billing enabled, you don’t need to worry about this option.

The number you enter depends on your subscription plan and how far you’re willing to go over your credit limit.

  1. Click “Create Key” to finalize your selections. A popup will appear with a code — this is your API key. Copy it to your clipboard using the provided button.

ElevenLabs Credit Limit

ElevenLabs sets a credit limit on their services. One minute of speech uses approximately 1,000 credits. In Spoken, you can keep track of how many credits you’ve used by looking at the ElevenLabs header on the Other Voices page.

Unless you have “usage based billing” enabled on your ElevenLabs account, you will not be able to use your ElevenLabs voices if you hit your credit limit. The total number of credits you have available is dependent on your subscription. Free users receive 10,000 credits per month.

How to get a free ElevenLabs subscription from a charitable organization

ElevenLabs has partnered with several charitable organizations to distribute free subscriptions for accessibility purposes. This is very helpful, as a normal free account only provides 10 minutes of talk time per month, which is far too little for the average AAC user. Subscribers also receive access to voice cloning.

If you have a diagnosed speech disability, see if you qualify for a free code from one of ElevenLabs’ Impact Partners, listed here. The same page has a video tutorial explaining how to redeem the codes provided by these organizations.
