Can I clone my voice with Spoken?

Cloning a voice through Spoken is possible but currently requires an active ElevenLabs subscription. To find the feature, you must link your ElevenLabs account to Spoken using an API key. We have a tutorial for that here.

If you’ve successfully linked Spoken to ElevenLabs with an API key and you have an active ElevenLabs subscription, you will see the option to clone your voice appear when you navigate to Settings > Use Voices From Other Sources.

Users who do not have an active subscription with ElevenLabs may be able to receive one for free. If you have a diagnosed speech disability, you may qualify to receive an unlock code from a charitable organization. You can find more information about that lower on the page.

How to clone your voice in Spoken with ElevenLabs

  1. Make sure you’ve entered an ElevenLabs API key.
  2. In Spoken, navigate to Settings > Use Voices From Other Sources > Clone My Voice
  3. On the “Clone My Voice” page, you will be prompted to record or upload at least ten seconds of voice audio. All recording should be done in a relatively quiet environment.
  4. Tap the large, blue microphone button.

The more audio you provide, the better the clone will be!” Below that is a large, blue button with a white microphone icon. Underneath that is an Upload button.
  1. Your device will ask you to grant permission for Spoken to use your microphone. Tap “Allow” to continue.

  1. Spoken will begin recording. When you’re finished, press the orange stop button where the microphone button used to be.
The microphone button has become an orange stop button and there is a timer below it showing how long you've been recording.

You can press the microphone button again to record additional audio clips if needed. Alternatively, you can tap “Upload Audio File” to attach files recorded in other apps.

  1. You can review your audio clip(s) by tapping on them anywhere. If you want to delete an audio clip, tap the X to its left.

  1. Below your audio clip(s) is a toggle to remove background noise — leave this off if there isn’t much background noise in your recordings, or it will negatively impact the quality of your voice clone.
The aforementioned toggle is highlighted in orange with an arrow point to it.
  1. Once you’ve finished, you can click the “Submit Audio” button to send your voice clips to ElevenLabs for processing. After a short wait, you will be returned to the previous page and your voice clone will now appear in the list among your other ElevenLabs voices.
An orange arrow points to the “Submit Audio” button at the bottom of the page in Spoken.
  1. To use your voice clone, find it in the list (it should be named “My Spoken Cloned Voice”) and tap it. A sample will play and it will be highlighted in blue.

  1. With the voice still highlighted, tap “Use Selected Voice” at the bottom of the page.

How to get a free ElevenLabs subscription from charitable organizations

Cloning your voice requires an ElevenLabs subscription, which can be costly. Fortunately, some charitable organizations distribute codes to unlock free ElevenLabs subscriptions for accessibility purposes. This is very helpful, as a normal free account only provides 10 minutes of talk time per month, which is far too little for the average AAC user.

If you have a diagnosed speech disability, see if you qualify for a free code from one of ElevenLabs’ Impact Partners, listed here. The same page has a video tutorial explaining how to redeem the codes provided by these organizations.

Cloning your voice through Apple

Users on iOS 17 and up can create an Apple Personal Voice through their device settings. This is a completely free alternative to ElevenLabs voice cloning, but it must be done completely outside of Spoken. We have a tutorial for that here. Once you’ve created your Apple Personal Voice and have enabled “Allow Apps to Request to Use” in settings, it should appear under the System Voices heading on Spoken’s Other Voices page.
