What’s Autism Acceptance Month?
Autism Acceptance Month was formerly known as Autism Awareness Month. This changed when the focus shifted from raising awareness to destigmatizing autism.
“Awareness” is traditionally associated with diseases or conditions people are trying to cure, prevent, or eliminate, like cancer. Autism, however, isn’t something to eradicate. It’s a natural variation in how people think, communicate, and experience the world. While autism can present real challenges, many of those challenges come from a mismatch between autistic needs and environments that aren’t designed with them in mind.
When the focus is only on awareness, the conversation can stop at recognition. Acceptance moves things forward. It encourages us to adapt environments, expectations, and communication so autistic people are supported as they are. The sooner we accept autism, the sooner we can focus on meaningful accommodations.
What does Autism Acceptance Month have to do with Spoken?
Autism Acceptance Month is especially meaningful to us because there’s a strong overlap between Spoken users and the autistic community. Over time, we’ve had the opportunity to hear from and interact with so many unique individuals: people with different communication styles, preferences, strengths, and challenges. We’ve also connected with parents, partners, caregivers, educators, and therapists, all working to better support the autistic people in their lives. These conversations reinforce just how important acceptance and understanding really are.
Acceptance also closely aligns with some of our core beliefs when it comes to developing Spoken. Communication doesn’t look the same for everyone, and it shouldn’t have to. We believe whatever approach makes you feel the most comfortable is valid, and nobody should be pressured to communicate in a single “correct” way. That’s why supporting different ways of thinking and communicating is one of our main goals in the development of Spoken.
We’re grateful to learn from this community every day. Autism Acceptance Month is a chance to celebrate those voices. We hope this month, and this offer, helps more people find a communication style that works best for them.
